Hi, I'm Lynn, Newquay's Purple Angels ambassador. Purple Angels is a campaign that promotes Dementia Aware Communities. So what does that mean?
The aim of Purple Angels is to make businesses, services and the community as a whole more accessible to those living with dementia. For those living with dementia, a once familiar world can often become an intimidating place. A greater understanding of dementia in the community allows those living with dementia, and their loved ones, to feel reassured that a friendly face is never far away.
As defined by DementiaUK, "Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of progressive conditions that affect the brain". There are over 200 different types of dementia, with the four most common being Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies. Contrary to popular belief, dementia can actually affect people of any age.
There are many different symptoms of dementia including memory problems, cognitive ability and communication. The progressive nature of the condition can often lead to frustration, as people may no longer to be able to perform tasks that were once second nature.
If you would like to know more about dementia, the following websites are a good place to begin.
We aim to move away from discrimination and promote a more inclusive community by educating businesses about dementia. We bring businesses on board by sitting down with their staff and talking about dementia, as well as providing an informative booklet.
Each time we educate staff, we add a handful more people to the community who have an understanding of the difficulties dementia can bring to those living with it, and how best to support them. By educating all the staff rather than one person from each company, we can spread dementia awareness beyond the workplace and into our day-to-day lives.
We will all be affected by dementia in one way or another at some point throughout our lives. With each new person on board, we are one step closer to a more inclusive world for those living with the condition.
If you are a business owner you can become a Purple Angels business by contacting Lynn. There is no fee required to join Purple Angels, simply an hour or so of your staff's time and a willingness to learn.
If you are not a business owner, there are still several ways you could help. Firstly, you could encourage your boss to join the Purple Angels campaign. You could also visit the websites above to increase your own knowledge of the condition.
Purple Angels runs a campaign to provide those living with dementia with free MP3 players.
Each MP3 player will have a personalised selection of the person's 15 favourite songs. Music has been shown to benefit those living with dementia, with musical memories remaining accessible for far longer than other memories. Being able to their listen to favourite songs can provide joy and comfort to those living with dementia.
Purple Angels welcomes any donations to help keep the MP3 player campaign running. Please get in touch if you would like to contribute.
